Kelly, I never mind questions from other parents and I am sure Macey's friend's mom doesn't either. Like I wrote, we never expect anyone else to keep track of what Zoe can and cannot eat so I am always happy to answer questions. I never want other parents to feel nervous or anxious about having Zoe over to their houses.

I'm so glad that you posted this, Emily. Macey has a friend that has food allergies and since I am so unfamiliar, it's nice to have another mom's take on it. The friend's mom is great about answering any questions I have, but I hate to constantly ask this or that. Like you, she brings special cupcakes and such to parties, but I do try to have allergen free snacks when her child visits. I figure a little bit of consideration goes a long way amongst friends. :)

Gosh, Mrs. Terry, I didn't know that you had a sibling with food allergies. I imagine it must have been so much more difficult for your parents to accommodate his allergies at that time. Not only were there fewer products but so much less awareness. My father also had allergies growing up, to dairy, for one thing and my grandparents told stories about trying to find goat milk, of all thing, for him to drink.

Thanks for your comment!

My younger brother was allergic to many foods, including chocolate, eggs, and nuts. In those days, there were nowhere near the food accommodations that are possible today, but still we were able to feed him and the rest of us (a family of seven) without too much fuss. Even today, I use two knives to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Emily, I love the attitude you are bringing to this issue -- every kid has a "handicap" and every kid has so many wonderful talents and gifts. Food is an emotionally-charged area, but your joyful frame of mind can teach people how to celebrate differences, and live together.

Thank you.
